When you want to get rid of excessive fat at certain places, which did not go away despite exercising and diet, liposuction can be a good solution. With liposuction fat can be removed from specific places in order to shape your body. Most common treatment areas include hips, thighs, belly, chin, breasts (for men), arms, saddle bags and upper legs. However, liposuction is not a way to lose weight.

Liposuction can be done under general or local anaesthesia. During the treatment the surgeon will first make small incisions through which a small cannula will be inserted to loosen the fat in the area that will be treated in order to create the desired shape. After that a suction device is attached to the cannula to suck out the excessive fat. After the procedure you will need to wear a garment during the first weeks to help your body to keep the new shape. The duration of the treatment is usually around one hour, but can be up to three hours, depending on the areas to be treated (multiple areas can be done in one treatment).

Most people can get home the same day and return to work within one or two weeks. After 3-4 weeks you should be able to resume your daily activities, except for exercising, which can be resumed after 10-12 weeks.

All invasive procedures have side effects. Most common side-effects after liposuction are pain, swelling, bruising and a changed sensation in the treated area.
